Paul Doyle, a motorist driving a grey Ford Galaxy, caused a mass casualty incident by deliberately driving into a crowd on Water Street during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade on May 26, 2025. The attack injured over 130 people, with at least fifty hospitalized, disrupting what was meant to be a celebratory event.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred shortly after 6 pm BST, approximately 10 minutes after the open-top bus carrying Liverpool players had passed. Doyle, described as a ‘nice guy’ neighbour, first argued with pedestrians before accelerating into the crowd. He briefly stopped when his vehicle’s windows were smashed but then accelerated again, striking more people. The vehicle involved was a grey Ford Galaxy.
Victims ranged widely in age, including children as young as nine and seniors up to 78 years old. Emergency services reported more than 130 injuries, with at least fifty individuals requiring hospitalization, including four children.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Emergency responders, including the North West Air Ambulance and St John Ambulance, arrived promptly and managed to clear the scene by 9:30 pm. The swift response was critical to managing what became one of Liverpool city’s most serious recent mass casualty events. Hospital units worked to treat a broad range of injuries amid the large crowd gathered for the celebration.
Context of the Event
The attack took place during Liverpool FC’s 2024–25 Premier League victory parade, which saw around one million people gather along the 10-mile parade route in Liverpool city center. The event was intended to celebrate the football club’s title win but was overshadowed by the violence inflicted by Doyle’s actions.
This incident has deeply affected the city and raised significant concerns around public safety at large-scale celebratory events. Authorities and community leaders are now reviewing security measures and supporting those impacted by the tragedy.
